But the newish brunch on the block – at Original Wings & Rings - takes some of the pondering out of filling your plates by offering a short and sweet (and spicy) brunch menu selected from its extensive full menu.
The American-style sports bar in DIFC offers a family friendly affair, complete with football and pool games tables.
Large screen TVs flashed music videos from most angles while we ate with tunes provided by a DJ and, later, live covers trio Carmen & The Black Ts.
The brunch takes in burgers, chicken wings, nuggets, quesadilla, onion rings, salads and dessert.
We eased our way into the feasting with a plate of nachos, generously cheddar-coated tortilla chips with green jalapenos and a tangy salsa.
Considering the name of the venue it would have been rude not to order their onion rings. They don’t disappoint.
A plate arrived, stacked high with hand-breaded hoops of onion, more like bracelets than rings. They’re a meal in themselves, so sharing is a must.
With the chat and refreshments flowing, we steadily worked our way through the food options, including a cleansing garden salad with a light ranch dressing to salve the calorie conscience.
The other decision to be made is heat level, rising from mild through “X-hot” and “atomic” to “one million”, which involves signing a disclaimer when ordering. All come with a choice of fries, curly or regular.
With the belt buckle beginning to get tested, we opted to go without the fries offered with the mini burger.
A cute little bun filled with a tasty homemade beef patty, topped with cheese, tomato and lettuce, it left enough room to sample our neighbour’s order of cheese quesadilla. These were thankfully light rather than the greasy, claggy wedges you find in some places.
Room for just desserts
After another break from grazing, dessert beckoned. The cheesecake proved to be the gentler option, baked but with a fluffy texture that didn’t feel too guilty.
The same couldn’t be said for the rich chocolate brownie. This was a no holds barred slab of naughtiness that would have gym instructors wincing, but was worth that extra 10 minutes on the treadmill come Sunday.
All in all, if a brunch is about catching up with friends or family in a casual atmosphere with fun food, then Original Wings & Rings has it nailed.
And with table service cutting out visits to food stations, there’s no breaking off from the chat.
