And if you’ve never caught them live before, prepare for one of the most unusual live spectacles you’ll set sight on. And that's coming from someone who has reviewed hundreds of concerts and theatre shows.
This latest incarnation of Blue Man Group lands at Dubai Opera tonight (Tuesday, April 11) for eight shows before heading off to du Forum on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi for five more nights, from next Tuesday.
Beyond the stage show, Blue Man Group has toured the globe with the ‘Megastar World Tour’ rock concert parody, produced multiple albums, including the Grammy-nominated Audio, and the recently released Three. They published their first ever book, Blue Man World, in October 2016.
Dubai Opera chief executive Jasper Hope knows what to expect of the show, brought to the UAE by YAK Events.
“The Blue Man Group is a truly unique entertainment experience known all over the world and it is fantastic that we are able to welcome them to Dubai Opera as part of their world tour,” he says.
“I saw their show for the first time in the US nearly 20 years ago and I cannot wait to see it again.”
Fans of the cult US comedy show Arrested Development may remember the extensive references to BMG by Tobias, a particularly unhinged character who painted himself blue and was obsessed with joining the band.
The colourful chaps have also featured in TV commercials, most notably for Intel, since the start of the millennium.
But part of the fascination is their almost child like curiosity on stage; with music, colour and light. The result is a noisy, unique and energetic spectacle that draws you in. All done without a single word being uttered by any band member.
A four-piece band – drummer, percussionist and two string players – join the trio on stage alongside some unique instruments, including a chapman stick - combination of a guitar and bass guitar - a washboard and a Shredmill, an electro-mechanical sequencer used to create rhythmic drum beats.
There's also the chance that audience members may be called upon to get involved.
